Johnny Rico has no plan. He's a high school kid in Buenos Aires, coasting, until the two people he cares about most, his friend Carl and Carmen, the girl he's loved since forever, sign up with the Federal Military. So he signs up too. Not out of duty. Mostly he just wants to follow Carmen into space. Then the bugs show up. Giant, insect-like things from the outer planets, and suddenly Earth is at war. Johnny's dream of flying after Carmen goes sideways fast: she gets tapped for pilot training, while he's shipped off to the infantry, a grunt with a rifle and not much else. Different corners of the same war. Same enemy chewing through everything in its path. Now he's got a helmet, a squad, and a fight he never asked for, and the girl he enlisted for is somewhere far away in a cockpit he'll probably never sit in. Can a kid who joined up for love actually survive as a soldier?
