Kitauji High's concert band pulled off first place in Kyoto, which means they're heading to the Kansai competition as the city's representative. Nobody's arguing about that. Their conductor, Noboru Taki, got them here, and now the rehearsals get harder, because the goal has shifted to nationals. So the whole summer disappears into a training camp, with Taki and his professional musician friends pushing every section past what they thought they could play. Then a student who walked away from the band once before decides she wants back in. For the second-years, that opens a door they had shut for a reason, and suddenly the sectionals are less about tempo and more about who can stand to sit next to whom. Kumiko is stuck in the middle of it, and on top of that she starts catching glimpses of Taki's past, of what actually drives him to drag this group toward gold. Everyone says they're committed. But commitment is easy in July. What happens when it costs you something, and who is still standing in the practice room when it does?
