Kakeru used to be fast. Then he got caught stuffing snacks into his jacket at a convenience store, and now he is sprinting down the street with a clerk yelling behind him. He shakes the guy off and nearly barrels into Haiji, a cheerful student who watches him catch his breath and immediately decides this kid should move into Chikusei-sou, a crumbling apartment with holes in the walls and eight other guys living in it. Kakeru has no money, no deposit, nothing. So he says yes. Then comes the party. Surprise: the place is a dorm for the Kansei University track club, and Haiji has been hiding his plan the whole time. He wants to run the Hakone Ekiden, a two hundred eighteen kilometer relay from Tokyo to the mountains, and he wants these ten people to do it. Problem is, half of them have never run a step. One guy just wants to drink. Nobody signed up for this. Haiji has months and a busted knee, Kakeru has speed he refuses to explain, and the rest have to figure out why they would even bother lacing up. Can a group of amateurs really survive the biggest college race in Japan?
