Changsha, 1913. Kong Zhaoshou takes over the Hunan First Normal School and tears up the old rulebook. New teachers, foreign and Chinese alike, fill the classrooms. The place comes alive. Applications pour in, and a nineteen year old named Mao Zedong sits at the top of the entrance list. Then the school turns into something more than a school. Mao, Cai Hesen, Xiao Zisheng and others argue about books and the future until late. Girls from the Zhounan Girls' Normal School, Tao Siyong, Xiang Jingyu, Yang Kaihui among them, push their way into the same conversations. A study group forms, and for a while it seems like ideas alone might change the country. Then soldiers arrive. Warlord Tang Xiangming throws the president out by force. Mao barely slips away from arrest, and everything the group believed about saving China through education starts to crack. Can a classroom really hold its ground when the streets outside are already at war?
