A famous writer finally has his life where he wants it. He and his lover Sacchan are about to end things together, on their own terms, the way he always pictured. Then a truck flattens him. He wakes up somewhere else entirely, with a priestess named Annette telling him he's been chosen to kill a demon king. His reaction: no thanks. He has one thing on his mind, and it isn't a throne or a sword. It's finding Sacchan, wherever she ended up. He sets off across monster country, and along the way pulls a martial artist named Tama out of a very bad moment. She decides to stick with him. Then Annette shows up too, drawn in by his whole gloomy personality and swearing to keep him alive. Which is a problem, because staying alive is the last thing he wants. He throws himself at danger every chance he gets. Somehow he keeps walking away from it. The three of them keep moving, and the real danger slowly stops looking like claws and fangs. It looks like people. Regular, human people doing terrible things, and maybe the one guy who can do anything about it is the guy who'd rather not be here at all. Can a man who wants to die be bothered to save anyone?
