A good summer buys the Meisei baseball team a flood of new hopefuls. Guys who never cared before suddenly want in. Kenji Nishiki, who once stormed off the team after a fight with the coach, walks back through the door like nothing happened. Then spring rolls around and four freshmen show up. Ichiban Natsuno wants the mound. Ryo Akai won't even touch a glove at first, and there's a reason. His older brother Tomohito sits Toma down and admits the two of them are stepbrothers, same setup as Toma and Soichiro, except theirs fell apart. Ryo quit baseball because living in his brother's shadow hurt too much. He still loves the game though, and he's good. So Tomohito asks Toma for a strange favor: play the villain and push Ryo back onto the field. Toma says yes. The East Tokyo preliminaries open, and Meisei keeps winning. Kenjo, Seinan, Eishin, each one tougher than the last, all of them dragging up memories of summers that ended too early. Old faces drift back in, including someone fans of a certain other series will recognize the second they appear. Can this team finally punch its ticket to nationals, or is another summer about to slip away?
