Sawako Machida has a system. Park yourself in the school library, keep a thick book open in your lap, and let everyone assume you are the smartest person in the room. Reading it? Too much effort. She would rather have people believe she devours classics than actually crack one open. Call her Miss Bernard, please. There is just one problem with the plan: the library is full of students who genuinely love these books, and they have zero patience for someone faking her way through their favorites. So the debates start. The Tale of the Heike, the Bible, Fermat's Last Theorem, whatever gets pulled off the shelf. Sawako argues with confidence she has not earned, and somehow the people around her keep talking to her anyway. Something strange happens while she is busy pretending: she starts picking things up, and the bookworms around her start to feel less like opponents. Can a person who refuses to read a single page still end up learning what a story is actually about?
