A shy courier named Innumael spends his days hauling packages across the capital, counting coins so he and his sister can eat. One morning a young soldier, Leocadio, helps him load a crate on his way to his first day on the job. Neither of them looks inside. That crate is illegal artillery, and by nightfall Innumael is the one wearing the crime, staring down a firing squad. The Empire has good reason to guard its guns so jealously. Something called the Light nearly wiped out humanity once, and what it left behind still kills: plague, monsters, and a government that answers every rumor with a curfew. Now the syndicate that set Innumael up is offering to pull him out of the fire, and Leocadio's very first assignment is to hunt down the smugglers who did it. Two strangers, one loaded crate, and both of them already in way over their heads. So what happens when the man you're supposed to arrest is the only one who can save you?
