A Japanese-American rookie named Daizaburo Edi-Ban gets assigned to New York's roughest precinct, the 34th. Day one, he meets his new partner: John Estes. Friends call him Sleepy. Everyone else calls him Mad Bull. Then the guy pulls a shotgun on a small-time thief. No warning, no arrest, just a blast. That is how Sleepy cleans up the streets, and he empties his pockets of cash stolen from prostitutes, leaving wrecked storefronts behind him like party confetti. Daizaburo, fresh and by-the-book, can barely keep up. Complaints pile on the captain's desk. But the money? It goes to a clinic for venereal disease and a shelter for battered women. Later, Lieutenant Perrine Valley joins the two of them for cases tied to the mafia and drug runners, and the chaos only grows. So what does a rookie do when his partner is a crook and a hero at the same time?
