Christmas Eve in Tokyo, all lights and noise, and a four year old named Miri wanders the streets by herself, hunting for a father she has never met. She follows the glow of a hotel and the smell of cake. What she actually walks into is the middle of a hit, a carefully built plan to take out a mafia boss. Kazuki and Rei kill people for money and share an apartment where nothing soft is allowed to stay. Their childhoods were ugly, and they have spent years keeping everyone at arm's length. Then the job falls apart and Miri ends up in their living room. The obvious move is to hand her back to her mother, so of course that is not what happens. Her laugh gets under Kazuki's skin first. Rei holds out longer, but not forever. Now a kid runs the schedule. She moves in ways nobody can predict, and keeping her alive, fed and happy turns out to be harder than any contract they have ever taken. The work does not stop. It cannot. Two men who call themselves papa, and one little girl who has no idea what they do when she is asleep. How long can that actually hold?
