Kaya Sato is the kid every kindergarten teacher dreads. She knocks over block towers, yanks books out of hands, blocks the bathroom door. Three teachers have already quit because of her. So when Chie Hasumi gets assigned to Kaya's class, she expects a brat who needs discipline. Then she watches Kaya chase something invisible out of the playroom, and the truth flips everything. The girl isn't tormenting her classmates. She's shielding them from spirits nobody else can see, spirits that were about to sink their claws into a kid reading a picture book. Chie decides to trust her. But the more she watches Kaya fight for the other children, the more she notices the scratches on Kaya's arms, the way she flinches when the sun goes down. Who is protecting Kaya when she goes home?
