Kafka Hibino spends his days cutting up dead monsters. It is steady work, it pays the bills, and it is nowhere near the life he wanted. Then he runs into Mina Ashiro, the girl he grew up with, now a star of the Defense Force. Something in him snaps back into place. He decides to try for the exam he gave up on years ago. Then his body changes. One moment he is a guy in a cleanup crew, the next he is a monster himself, and not a small one. His junior coworker Reno is the only one who knows, and together they keep the secret while Kafka studies for the test that could put him at Mina's side. But intelligent kaiju, ones that think and plan, hit a Defense Force base, and everything gets worse fast. People are dying, the exam does not matter anymore, and Kafka has one move that could save everyone or destroy the life he is clawing toward. What does he do when the only way to fight a monster is to become one in front of the woman he is trying to reach?
