A dog goes up first. November 1957, and the whole planet watches Zirnitra launch a stray into orbit, which means the race is on and Arnack is already breathing down their necks. But a dog's body tells you nothing about what space does to a person, and you can't send a person up just to find out. So the brass dig up an alternative. Vampires. Close enough to human to matter, different enough that nobody in charge will lose sleep over one of them. Then comes Irina, hauled out of her mountain home and dropped into a training program she never asked for. She doesn't fight it. She trains. Lev, a backup pilot who lost his shot at being the first man up, gets handed the job of babysitting her, and somewhere between the simulators and the medical tests these two stop being handler and subject. They both want the same thing, to see what's up there, and that's the problem. Two countries, one launch window, and a girl who is the experiment. What happens when the only person qualified to fly is the one they were never going to bring home?
