Mining ore in deep space is dirty work, and the Excavate Company does it with robots called I-Machines. Their crews plug their own minds into metal bodies to survive the vacuum, led by Grayman, a man with a reputation and no interest in playing nice. They dig up orichalt, they sell it, they move on. Simple. Then a job goes sideways and they pull a student out of the wreckage. Maya Mikuri was left behind by her own people, and they are saying she stole classified data about orichalt. So now she is stuck on a mining ship full of strangers, trying to clear her name while the same crew that abandoned her is hunting her down. Somewhere in the middle of all this is Ido, the group's best pilot, who cannot remember a single thing about who he was before he ended up in that machine. Maya wants her life back. Ido might finally get a shot at finding out he ever had one. But what happens when the man with no past turns out to be the one everyone else has been looking for?
