Yuusuke Yotsuya can't stand Tokyo, and the people crammed into it even less. Give him a screen and a virtual world and he's fine. Then one afternoon he spots the school's star athlete Iu Shindou chatting with Kusue Hakozaki, the girl who's barely around because of her illness. He glances away. Glances back. Both of them are gone. Next thing he knows, he's falling. He hits water, surfaces, and there's a pack of enormous monsters staring back at him. Shindou and Hakozaki pulled him into some kind of game, and a being called the Game Master hands out roles on the spot: Shindou gets mage, Hakozaki gets warrior, and Yotsuya, by pure accident, gets farmer. They have fourteen days to finish the quest. Dying isn't even permanent here: go down and you're back on your feet in thirty seconds, as long as one of your party is still breathing. The quests keep coming, and each one is nastier than the last. Demons, monsters, a real world that needs protecting from all of it. Why did the three of them get picked, and who exactly is running this game?
