Qwenthur dreams of designing Objects, those enormous spherical war machines that ended conventional warfare overnight. One prototype once stopped an attack from fourteen countries and wiped out every soldier sent against it. Now battles are decided only when Object fights Object. So he ships off to an Alaskan base to study them up close, and that is where he meets Milinda, the elite pilot of one of these steel giants. She shows him what the job really costs. Then everything goes sideways. A fight turns bad, and Qwenthur and Havia, a radar analyst with a noble name and a smart mouth, end up on the ground with nothing but rifles and their own heads. An enemy Object is right there, and infantry are not supposed to survive that. Everyone above them is panicking, the allied troops are scattering, and the two of them are running out of options. Together with Milinda and their commander Frolaytia, the unit gets dragged from one battlefield to the next, always the underdogs, always improvising against something built to be unbeatable. But if a couple of foot soldiers can find a crack in an Object, what does that say about the pilots who ride inside them?
