Half a century after a global nuclear war nearly wiped out humanity, the World Health Organization runs almost everything. People are counted as public resources, and in exchange they get medicine, nanomachines and a carefully managed kind of happiness. Japan is the safest, kindest place on earth. Three high school girls decide that kindness is a cage. Miach, Tuan and Cian plan to die together before WatchMe, the implant that tracks every citizen's health, switches on inside them. On the day itself, one of them backs out. Tuan wakes up in a hospital bed. Miach never does. Thirteen years on, Tuan carries a badge instead of a cause, working for Helix and chasing weapons and drugs through war zones until a senior inspector catches her smuggling and ships her home. The day she lands, thousands of people across Japan kill themselves at once. Now she has to find whoever made that happen, and the trail keeps pointing back at the friend she left behind. Was Miach's death really a death, or just the first move in something much bigger?
