The war against the giant beasts has dragged on for decades, and every city that survives owes it to the Paladins and the Clerics whose wild magic they borrow. Jiiro used to be one of those Paladins. Now he is just a man burying his partner and wondering what is left. Then he runs into Kuumi. Her powers have only just woken up, and she has no idea how to hold them back. She is also a runaway. A contract to put down one beast saves the city and ties Jiiro to her, and that is when he finds out who is chasing her: men from Mezami's research lab, where she was kept. What were they doing to her in there? He takes the job anyway. Him, Kuumi, and Myaa, a kid in a cat-eared hood, drifting from town to town with hunters somewhere behind them. That is when it gets ugly. Officials far above them start moving pieces, and the three of them figure out that the claws and teeth are not the worst thing out on the road. So who exactly is Mezami protecting with all this, and why does he want one girl back so badly?
