Everyone in that small northern town knows the big loud woman flipping meat at the grill. Nikuko-chan, they call her, and she has spent years drifting from one man to the next, one town to the next, never staying anywhere long enough to unpack. Now she and her daughter, also named Kikuko, live on a houseboat bobbing in the bay, and for once it looks like the wandering might be over. Here is the catch: the two of them share a name and not much else. Nikuko barges through life belly-first, laughing too loud, flirting with the fishermen, and her daughter shrinks a little smaller every time it happens. Quiet, watchful Kikuko just wants a normal day at middle school. What she gets instead is gossip, awkward crushes, and a strange classmate named Ninomiya who seems to be hiding something worth digging into. Mother and daughter keep circling each other, one charging ahead, one holding back, and neither saying the thing that actually matters. So what is Nikuko really running from, and how long can a houseboat hold two people who barely know how to talk to each other?
