Harumi Kazuhito spends his days buried in novels, especially anything by the writer Natsuno Kirihime. Then he spots her at a cafe, a robber bursts in, and he jumps in front of the bullet meant for her. He dies on the floor. A bookworm, of all things, drags him back, and he wakes up as a dachshund with a taste for paper and no thumbs to turn pages. A woman with a pair of scissors finds him. It is Kirihime, and she is not gentle about it. She is sharp, a little unhinged, and she keeps him around. He wanted to meet his favorite author. Now he is her pet, living under the same roof as the person he died for. He still loves books, but a dog cannot read them. He still has human thoughts, but nobody hears them. Kirihime looms over him with those scissors and that unsettling smile, and he has to figure out what she wants from him. Is she grateful, or does she just like having something to torment?
