A bored death god drops a notebook into the human world just to see what happens. Ryuk has watched plenty of fools chase big ideas, and this one looks no different. Then a top student picks it up in a schoolyard, flips through the blank pages, and figures out what he is holding. Write a name, picture the face, and that person dies. Light has hated how rotten everything has become, so he decides this is his chance to wipe out every criminal and build something clean in their place. Heart attacks start piling up. Cops notice the body count and call in L, a detective nobody has ever seen, who lives for exactly this kind of puzzle. Two brilliant minds, one hidden behind a screen and one hiding in plain sight, begin circling each other. Every move is a lie. Every lie is a test. Ryuk just floats there, grinning, because watching a fool try to fix the world beats doing nothing. But there is a catch Light never stops to consider: evil is part of good, and you cannot cut out one without bleeding the other. When he finally looks back, what will he see?
