Belle Lablac is the only human in a world of talking beasts, and she is still healing from what Adonis did to her. The wounds from that fight have not closed. Neither has the guilt, or the feeling of being thrown away. So she does the only thing she can think of: she gets up and goes looking for where she came from, without him. Then she meets her old comrades from the Catacombs, and Guinness stirs up trouble. He stands in front of everyone and asks why the battle went the way it did, then goes further and questions the law itself. In Schubertland, the good guys are supposed to die fighting evil. That is the deal. Guinness wants King Rawhide to declare the Catacombs neutral ground, and Belle backs him. Meanwhile, Adonis has switched sides. He walks back into Schubertland, heads straight for the king, and the whole country starts to tilt toward chaos. Belle has no companion, no answers about her past, and now her former friend is the one threatening everything she is trying to protect. Can she hold off the darkness he brings while still chasing the truth about herself?
