In a land where everyone has fur, fangs, or scales, Belle Lablac has nothing. No claws. No feathers. Just smooth skin and a nickname the locals spit out: the Faceless. Raised by a legendary swordsman named Sian, she grows up lonely and restless, and one day she leaves home for the city of Schubertland, where King Rawhide hands out the title of Nomad to those worthy of it. She wants that badge. More than that, she wants an answer to a question that has haunted her since childhood: what is she? Then comes the catch. Her great sword Runding refuses to cut anyone. She can swing it all she likes, and it will not draw a drop of blood, so the only way she can win a fight is to shatter her opponent's blade instead. Nobody respects that trick. In a society obsessed with honor and form, breaking swords is filthy, cowardly, unthinkable. Belle does it anyway. So now she walks through a world that flinches when it looks at her. She gets stared at in the streets, mocked for her bare face, hated for refusing to play by the rules. Training, fighting, bleeding, moving on. Somewhere out there is the truth about where she came from. Will she find it before the people who cannot stand the sight of her decide she does not belong at all?
