It's 1996, but not the one you remember. Both sides have bases on the Moon and Mars now, and the Cold War never cooled down. It just moved up. Down on Earth, and far above it, everyone keeps one eye on the sky and waits for the bombs. On Mars, sixteen kids and their instructor Elizabeth arrive at a UN base for a student exchange meant to build a little peace. Then four humanoid machines nobody can identify slam into each other right over the landing field. The base is gone in minutes. Elizabeth and five of the kids survive: Arthur, Roan, David, Simone, and Anna, the fourteen year old telling us all of this. When the shooting stops, one machine walks over to the terrified group, kneels, and a hatch slides open. The pilot looks at them and says only that Earth is at stake. They are stranded on a planet that just turned into a war zone, with no way home and no idea who was fighting or why. Was this ambush meant for the base, or did those six kids just happen to be standing in the wrong place at the wrong time?
