Black Torch
Jirou can talk to animals, and that's not the strangest thing about him. His grandfather raised him on old shinobi techniques, and the two of them keep the clan's fighting style alive in a quiet house. Then Jirou finds a wounded black cat and carries it home. The cat is Ragou, a mononoke, one of the demonic spirits that have been at war with humans for ages. When another mononoke shows up hunting Ragou, Jirou steps in front of it with everything his grandfather taught him. It isn't enough. He takes a wound that should kill him, and Ragou, who could have devoured the boy's fading energy to heal himself, does the opposite. He pours what's left of his own power into Jirou and brings him back, stronger than before. An agent named Shiba watches it happen, then makes an offer: join his new squad, Black Torch, and fight the mononoke that prey on people. But Ragou's power is enormous, and there are those who want it for themselves. Now Jirou is a target too. Can he hold on to who he was, or does he become a piece in a war between humans and demons?
