Florence in the early 1500s is bursting with paint and marble and new money, and Arte, a nobleman's daughter, wants nothing more than to add her own hand to it. Then her father dies. The one person who ever took her sketches seriously is gone, and what's left is a marriage contract and a lifetime of running a household. She walks out instead, straight into the streets, looking for a master who will take her on. Every workshop door slams. A woman with a brush? Nobody has time for that joke. She keeps knocking anyway, and eventually a painter named Leo, who happens to have no apprentices at all, shrugs and lets her in. It is not kindness. It is closer to an experiment. Now she scrubs floors and grinds pigments and sleeps in a room far from anything she grew up with, earning her keep one stubborn day at a time. Leo watches. The other artists watch harder. So how long can a girl with no name in the guild keep proving that her hands are just as good?
