By 2046 Mars is a sprawling city, and the dream of space has stalled out. Jobs are scarce, the mood is ugly, and everyone needs someone to blame. That blame lands on the biroids, artificial people built from metal and flesh who did the dirty work of settling the planet. Detective Ross Sylibus transfers in from Earth after a robot murders his partner, and he wants nothing to do with any of them. Then he walks off his flight into a crime scene: a country singer from his own plane, dead in the terminal. His new partner shows up with a bad attitude and a mouth on her. Naomi Armitage. Sylibus can barely stand her, and she keeps vanishing on him, keeps knowing things she shouldn't. Meanwhile somebody is working through a list, killing a rare and secret line of biroids called Thirds, the ones built to look human and to have children. Body by body, the list gets shorter. When Sylibus finally corners the truth about his partner, it isn't the answer he was hunting for. So what exactly is Armitage, and why does the killer seem to know her name?
