Aria the Origination
On the water planet Aqua, three girls spend their days rowing gondolas through the canals of Neo-Venezia, a rebuilt Venice where the buildings rise straight out of the sea. Akari, Aika and Alice are apprentices, and they have been at this long enough that the oar no longer feels strange in their hands. Their teachers are the three finest gondoliers in the city, the ones people call the Water Fairies: patient Alicia, strict Akira, and Athena, who trips over her own feet but never over a kind word. Then comes the shift. The training that once filled every hour starts to run out. The girls can steer, they can read a passenger's mood, they can handle a sudden squall. What they don't have yet is a style of their own, something that says this is me and no one else. And the title of Prima Undine isn't handed out for good behavior. It has to be earned, and the women they lean on won't be standing beside them forever. So they push ahead through the small stuff and the hard stuff alike, warm afternoons, quiet doubts, the fear that they are not ready and the suspicion that they might be. Neo-Venezia keeps offering up its gentleness, but the clock is ticking somewhere underneath it. When the day finally comes to row alone, will any of them know it's time?
