Winter settles over Neo-Venezia, and in the Himeya Company the old gondola waits for its next owner. Everyone expects Aika S. Granzchesta to take it. She is the successor, the branch manager, the one whose hands should close around the oar and carry the tradition forward. Then she says no. She calls the legendary boat cursed and flatly refuses to inherit it. Her apprentice Azusa B. McLaren cannot make sense of it, and when she corners Aika for an answer, she gets almost nothing. So Azusa and the other Undines start scheming behind her back, trying to set up a meeting that will finally force the truth out. Meanwhile the cold keeps coming, the city glows in its quiet winter light, and Aika keeps drifting back to her own years on the water: the teachers, the mistakes, the small moments that turned her into who she is. What exactly did that gondola take from her, and what is she so afraid it will take from Azusa next?
