Kanna slips out of the shrine at night, taking only Ryuuya and Uraha with her. Behind them the palace goes on as if nothing happened. The three of them move fast, because the people who want Kanna at that other shrine will notice she is gone, and they will come. Kanna is not running from a duty. She is running toward her mother, a woman she has not seen in years. Between the hard marching and the hiding, something strange happens: the world outside the palace turns out to be bright and loud and full of small things worth stopping for. Ryuuya keeps watch. Uraha laughs. For a few days it almost feels like a trip instead of an escape. Their pursuers are gaining. Everyone knows it, and nobody says it out loud. How long can three people keep walking before the road runs out?
