Sara grew up in India, lost her mother early, and her father brings her to a London boarding school for proper young ladies before he heads back overseas. She is smart, kind, and the headmistress treats her like a prized guest. Then one day Sara gets called into that office and hears the worst news a child can get. Her father is dead. Worse, there is no money left. The school doesn't send her away. It puts her to work. The girl who had her own room and pretty dresses now scrubs floors and carries coal, sleeping in a cold attic. And the classmates who used to fight for a seat next to her? They turn on her fast, like she caught something contagious. Only a few stay. So Sara has to figure out who she is when the title, the clothes, and the friends are gone. She keeps her chin up, keeps imagining better things, makes a couple of real friends, and refuses to let the headmistress grind her down. But when everyone treats you like a nobody, how long can you keep telling yourself you're still a princess?
