Nori Kamitsuki is moving from Chiba to Gunma, and somewhere on the train his phone lights up. It is his old friend Otoya, warning him to turn back: nobody who enters Gunma ever comes home. Nori decides he is getting off at the next stop. Then the doors refuse to open, and the people around him in the car start looking less like passengers and more like something out of a zombie movie. He survives the trip, barely, and lands in a new school where everyone eyes him like a foreign body. What saves him is Otoya again, now class president, who pulls him into a circle of locals. These kids have a mission. They drag Nori around to prove Gunma is not the dump everyone jokes about, and the place really is unlike the rest of Japan: the food, the landmarks, the way a normal school day works, even how the people talk. In 2012 it ranked dead last in a livability survey. They are not about to let that stand. So Nori keeps eating things he cannot name and following his friends into one local oddity after another, slowly admitting that Gunma might be less awful than advertised. Just extremely strange. Extremely. But if the doors on that train would not open for him, was he ever actually allowed to leave?
