The old man on the bed had one last thing to say to his grandson, and it wasn't a blessing. Play the shamisen your own way, Matsugorou told him, or put it down forever. Setsu Sawamura had spent his whole childhood listening to his grandfather play, copying every note. What else was he supposed to do with his hands now that the man was gone? So he leaves. Ditches school, boards a train, lands in Tokyo with no plan at all. The city turns out to be the worst possible cure: too loud, too fast, a wall of noise that buries the sound he came looking for. Then his mother shows up. Umeko is rich, she is used to getting her way, and within days Setsu is back in a classroom at Umezono Academy, whether he likes it or not. That's where Shuri Maeda finds him. She is obsessed with the Tsugaru shamisen, chasing a song her grandmother heard once and never forgot, and she needs someone to teach her club how to play. Setsu agrees. Reluctantly, badly, one string at a time. And somewhere between lessons and arguments with his brother Wakana, the thing he thought he'd lost starts to come back. But the sound his grandfather demanded, the one that belongs to Setsu and nobody else: is he any closer to finding it?
