Rentt Faina has spent ten years in the dungeon swinging his sword at slimes and goblins. No talent, no glory, just enough coin for dinner. Then one day he pokes into a passage in the Dungeon of the Water Moon he has never noticed before. A dragon is waiting inside. It eats him. That should be the end of it. Except Rentt wakes up. He can move, he can think, but his heart is not beating and he is not breathing, because there is nothing left of him but bone. A skeleton, the bottom rung of the undead ladder. Panic does not come. He just goes back to work, and that is when he notices something strange: every monster he cuts down pushes him one step up the evolutionary chain. Flesh, maybe. A face, eventually. If he keeps climbing, a vampire waits at the top, close enough to human that nobody would look twice. There is a catch. The mask stays on, the old name stays buried, and the guild would happily burn him where he stands if anyone found out. Lorraine Vivier, a retired adventurer turned researcher, gives him a roof and a surname, and Rentt starts over as a rookie chasing the mithril rank he always wanted. So how long can a dead man keep pretending to be alive?
