A war ended forty four years ago, and with it the demon contracts that had nearly torn the world apart. Now those pacts are forbidden, a line nobody is supposed to cross. Cecily Cambell knows all of this and still charges into a market brawl on her first real day as a knight, swinging the old family sword her father left her. It snaps. Just like that, the heirloom is in pieces on the cobblestones, and a stranger with an oddly curved blade steps in to finish the fight for her. She tracks down the local blacksmith to get the sword fixed. The blacksmith is the stranger. Luke Ainsworth takes one look at the broken steel and basically tells her it is beyond saving, which is not the answer she walked in for. Then bandits hit a convoy outside the city, and these are not ordinary bandits. Something icy and not human comes with them. Luke draws on a power that was outlawed for a reason, and cuts them down anyway. Off in the distance, a hooded figure watches the whole thing without moving. Why is someone so interested in a blacksmith who breaks the one rule everyone else obeys?
