Hikari has never lost at anything. Not once. Then her father drags her to meet some friend's kid, a boy named Kei, and she challenges him to a match on the spot. She loses. She demands a rematch. She loses again, and again, until the scoreboard becomes a joke she cannot laugh at. From that day she has one goal: beat Kei Takishima at absolutely everything. So she follows him all the way to Hakusenkan, an elite academy her carpenter father can barely afford, and grinds her way to second place in the entire school. Second. Always second, right behind him. The two of them sit at the top of a seven-member class called Special A, trading wins in exams, sports, eating contests, whatever they can turn into a duel. The thing is, Kei is not really fighting back. He never has been. He looks at her the way you look at something you have already decided to keep, and Hikari, brilliant at everything except this one thing, notices nothing at all. How long can a person chase a rival before they finally see what is standing right in front of them?
