Three orphans grew up together in eighteenth century Italy: Tenma, who picks fights but always stands up for what is right, gentle Alone who would rather paint than do anything else, and Sasha, the girl they both looked after. Then the family fell apart. Sasha was taken away, and Tenma left for the Sanctuary to train as a Saint, promising Alone he would come back once he made it. He does come back. Only by then Sasha has been revealed as the reincarnation of Athena, and Alone, the kindest of the three, has been chosen as the vessel for Hades. So the Holy War that breaks out every two hundred years is not some distant legend this time. It is two friends on opposite sides of it, and Tenma ends up wearing the Pegasus armor, knowing exactly whose face he will find behind the enemy's mask. The three of them are bound together by something none of them chose, and the whole war for the earth unfolds from that. Can Tenma raise his fist against the boy he grew up with?
