The war is over. Earth lost. What is left of the cities is rubble, and the killing machines both sides built keep going, hunting down the survivors long after their masters stopped giving orders. With old grudges still fresh, nobody can mount a real resistance. So the plan is simple: run. Pack whoever is left onto ships and head for Mars Base, where humanity might get a second chance. One young woman among the evacuees carries two things she never asked for. The first is the weight of her father's role in the destruction. The second is stranger, and she has no idea it is even there: the key to saving everyone. Friends and allies start drifting toward her anyway, pulled by something none of them can explain. The machines are still out there. The evacuation has not even begun. And if she really is the key, what happens when someone else figures that out first?
