Touya Senji has spent his whole life being compared to a brother who isn't even around anymore. He studies hard, tries hobbies, gets nowhere. His only real strength is grades. Then kids at school start whispering about a killer who leaves flower petals behind, and a transfer student named Haito Le Buffet walks into his class, watching him a little too closely. That same night, the two of them run straight into the killer. Haito doesn't flinch. She tells Touya something strange: it doesn't matter how talentless you are, if you had a talent in a past life, you can use it as your own. Then she draws a blade across her own throat. People called Returners pull off impossible feats this way, and Touya turns out to have one too, a nasty one that lets him rip talents away from other Returners. He doesn't care about saving anyone. He wants to beat his dead brother's shadow, and teaming up with Haito is just the fastest route. So he fights alongside her and the others against reincarnated monsters who have no interest in playing nice. But a kid who only ever wanted to be the best, standing next to people who actually want to protect the world: how long before that difference tears the whole thing apart?
