Oz Vessalius turns fifteen, and his biggest problem is a father who never shows up. The heir to one of the four great dukedoms lives easy, until the day of his coming-of-age ceremony, when armed men walk in and drag him off with no charge, no trial, nothing. Their sentence: the Abyss. A parallel world of demons called Chains, where time runs strange and no human survives. It is not a bedtime story after all. Lucky for him, the strongest Chain down there decides to make a deal. Her name is Alice. In human form she is a pretty girl; in her real one she is the Bloodstained Black Rabbit. She gets him out, and that is when the ground really shifts: ten years have passed up here without him. His old life is gone, and a secret outfit called Pandora watches every move anyone makes near the Abyss. Step around them and you can lose your soul. Now Oz has to figure out why he was thrown in, what Alice actually wants from him, and why his own existence suddenly seems to matter so much to people he has never met. What did his family sign away before he was even born?
