A plague that only kills men has been burning through Edo Japan for eighty years. No cure, no explanation. The male population has shrunk to a quarter of what it was, so women took over everything: the fields, the trades, the throne. Yoshimune Tokugawa now wears the title of shogun, and she is not happy about the circus she inherited. Three thousand young men live in her Inner Chambers, picked for their looks, protected by law because the country needs them to make children. She thinks the whole arrangement is absurd. She wants to know how it started. So she pulls out the old chronicles, and the story crawls backward to a single moment: a monk named Arikoto Madenokoji, dragged out of his temple and told his life no longer belongs to him. He is to serve the shogun and her court of men, and the court has rules for everything. Who decided a monk should trade his robes for silk, and what did the first female shogun have to do with it?
