Lady Sheru can't sleep. Every night the same dream drags her back to a life she never lived, when she was someone called Pirotesse. And every night she sees Ashram, the man she loves, suffering at the hands of something wearing the face of their old king Beld. It isn't Beld. It's Barbas, a soul that has crawled inside the dead king's skin and will not let go. She takes the dream for what it is: a cry for help. So she goes looking for the Chaos Ring, the one thing that might open a road into the chaos and let her reach him. Nowhere in Crystania is that trip safe. At the same time, Redon and his friends are picking up weapons again, because creatures sealed away for centuries are waking up, and they are not waking up friendly. Two searches, one land, and the old companions about to run straight into each other. What does Barbas want with Ashram, and what happens if Sheru reaches him too late?
