A goblin tribe storms Parn's village. He fights them off with a handful of friends, and once the dust settles they leave home together: Etoh the priest, Deedlit the elf, Ghim the dwarf, Slayn the magician. Their plan is simple. Find out what has been poisoning the island of Lodoss. Then a fortified city slaps them in chains. The soldiers let them go soon enough, but not before they watch Ashram cut down the city's captain and take the place for his master Beld. Parn can do nothing. That failure burns, and he swears he will get strong enough to beat Ashram one day. Beld wants to rule Lodoss, or so it looks. Behind him, though, the ancient witch Karla is awake and pulling strings of her own, and her plans are far worse than any war. Parn needs more allies, and fast. Can six young heroes really stop a catastrophe that the whole island seems to be sleepwalking into?
