He was born into a world of magic and noble houses and never made a sound. No first cry, just silence and a stare that made the midwives uneasy. Years pass and Dewey still does not speak. His father commands the empire's armies, a man used to winning, and he keeps waiting for some spark in his eldest son. There is none. The family writes him off as the slow one, the heir with nothing behind his eyes, and ships him back to the Roland Plains where he can embarrass no one. Then the sky takes him. Somewhere over the water he crashes onto an empty island, and what waits there is not rescue. It is a servant of something dark, offering a bargain. Dewey takes it. Power floods in, more than a sickly boy should be able to hold, and the world that tossed him aside suddenly looks very small from where he now stands. He remembers another life. He remembers things nobody in this empire has ever heard of, and he plans to use every scrap of it. The prophecy says Roland will fall and a chosen one will rise to save it. Dewey has no interest in saving anything. He only wants the sneer wiped off his family's face, and if becoming a devil is the price, he will pay it. But a deal with a demon is never a simple trade, is it?
