In the eleventh year of Meiji, swords are outlawed and samurai are fading into memory. Not everyone took the news well. Angry ronin turned to crime, blood spilled, and the government answered by dropping a massive prison on an island in the middle of Lake Biwa. No roads, no bridges. The only way in or out is by boat, which is where the Kumou brothers come in. Tenka, the eldest, ferries convicts across the water while his younger brothers Soramaru and Chuutarou help him, alongside Shirasu, an ex-Fuma ninja who somehow fits right into their cramped, cheerful household. Between hauling prisoners and scraping together food money, they seem like ordinary brothers with an odd side job. Then the whispers start. Every three hundred years, the Orochi reincarnates in a human body, and its shadow is already creeping across Oumi. Different factions are hunting for the vessel, and they want very different things: some to seal it away, others for reasons far worse. For the Kumou brothers, the legend stops being a bedtime story the moment it comes knocking at their door. What exactly are they hiding behind all those quiet days on the lake?
