A priestess watches her temple burn. Everyone inside is slaughtered, and Isanami barely makes it into the forest alive. There she runs into Saizo Kirigakure, a ninja with no master and no real direction, who saves her mostly because he happens to be standing there. He agrees to escort her to Ueda Castle, where Yukimura Sanada listens to her story and, without much hesitation, starts rounding up warriors to protect her. That is when things get strange. Something dark and enormous sleeps inside the girl, and it does not stay quiet for long. Sanada handpicks ten fighters for the job, among them Sasuke Sarutobi, who already leads a crew of famous ninja. Saizo and Isanami crisscross a country torn apart by war, hunting down each new recruit while assassins and warlords chase the same power she carries around like a lit fuse. Every warrior they find has his own reasons for signing on, and not all of them are noble. Saizo keeps telling himself he is only there to guard her, yet he keeps stepping between her and the blades. What happens when the thing inside Isanami finally wakes up, and the only people standing in its way are ten strangers?
