Scientists found something buried in the world all along. A substance called Exotic Matter that plugs straight into the human brain, and it has been quietly nudging our minds and our history for centuries. Now every government and every megacorporation wants a piece of it. Two factions rose out of the scramble. The Enlightened treat XM as a gift, a way to push what people can do and feel. The Resistance calls it a hostile takeover of the mind and bets on plain old technology instead. Then the fight lands in Tokyo. Makoto Midorikawa is a special investigator with the metropolitan police, and his trick is ugly and useful: one touch and he reads the memories of whoever he touches. Sara Coppola has nothing left. She is the only person who walked out of an XM research lab before it blew up, and she is carrying whatever the blast left behind. Powerful people want the substance for themselves, and that puts the detective and the survivor on the same case. He digs through heads. She holds the one memory nobody else has. What happens when the only witness has already lost everything, and the one man who can see inside her mind is the last person she should trust?
