Thirteen years ago, nine out of ten people died from a sickness that wouldn't let them stay dead. The ones who came back don't knock. They just tear. Survivors built small villages far from the empty cities, and a whole generation has grown up knowing nothing else. Aki has no memories of the old world at all. What she has is a missing father and a question nobody in her village wants to answer. So she runs. Haru and Natsuki go with her, out past the fence and into open ground, and that's when the dead close in from every side. They fight their way clear, pick up two more strays, Yuu and Sakura, and barricade themselves inside a home improvement store. Aisles of tools and paint, and outside, a crowd that never stops coming. Now the group has to decide what they actually are: kids hiding behind shelves, or something with teeth. Aki still doesn't know where her father went, or if the world he remembers is even worth finding. But if the dead can be killed, what happens when the living finally start pushing back?
