A healer walks the roads with a small silent bell at her side, and almost nobody knows her face. The yaoguai do. Spirits and demons send for her when something inside them breaks, because her gift works on their kind and not on people. She keeps a young monk close, and a serpent who wears a man's shape, and together they drift from one province to the next. Then the cases start to pile up in ways that feel less like illness and more like someone leaving marks. A fox split into two colors. A bird that coughs up gold. A wolf wearing a human life. A tiny spirit that only exists in water. Every one of them carries a wound, and every wound has a story behind it. She mends what she can: the body first, then the grief underneath. But the road keeps pointing her toward something she will not name, and the bell stays quiet. What is she actually running from?
