Kurumi's boyfriend Hal died in a plane crash, and she has barely left the house since. She sits in the dark, keeps the curtains drawn, lets the days blur together. Then her grandfather sends a robot. It wears Hal's face, answers to Hal's name, and says it was built to pull her back into the world. She wants nothing to do with it. She slams the door, turns away, tells it to leave. But the thing comes back the next morning, and the one after that, patient in a way no person ever is, and something in her starts to crack open. Slowly, badly, she lets it in. That is when the questions begin. Why does this machine know things only Hal knew? What did her grandfather really build, and what is it hiding behind that familiar smile? And if the boy you lost knocked on your door wearing a body made of metal, would you let yourself love him twice?
